| He wrote of the Bible as myth and metaphor, at a time when most Christians believed it to be literal history. He rejected dogma, urging men and women to use reason to arrive at their own understanding of God. Emanuel Swedenborg was a maverick thinker whose unique blend of science and mysticism helped to blaze new trails of spiritual thought. His writings inspired a pioneering religious movement that established deep roots in the Canadian prairies, where it survives to this day. Swedenborg: Mystical Cowboy is an hour-long documentary that examines the life and legacy of this remarkable figure. The viewer's guide on the voyage is filmmaker Michael Hamm, grandson of one of the founders of the Swedenborgian faith in Western Canada. Swedenborg brought characteristic intellectual rigour to his study of religion. Over 23 years, he would write more than two dozen volumes devoted to showing the Bible in a new light. He dismissed literal readings of scripture, and stressed the need for individuals to read and interpret the Bible for themselves. Swedenborgian philosophy would come to influence many writers and thinkers, from Walt Whitman to Jorge Luis Borges. And in time, it became the basis of a new religion. Swedenborg: Mystical Cowboy was produced by Kerrie Long and directed by Michael Hamm for Frame 30 Productions (www.frame30.com) in association with VisionTV. Alberta Nokes was Executive Producer for Vision. For university, college, or other institutional sales, please contact George Christoff at FilmWest at info@filmwest.com . |
